Bare Nature Surfboards
1971
Byron Bay

In 1971, Bob Newland started Bare Nature Surfboards on his farm outside of Byron, assisted by Bob Rasby.
Bob
started a partnership with Roy Meisel, an "old and still best friend" recently arrived from the U.S., and the business then moved into the Bay, with a stable of several renown "sculptors."

"P.S. Re-ad [right]: Midget never made it there that year to shape boards boards for us."

Bob Rasby later moved to N.Z. and started his own surfboard shop in Gisbon.

Second advertisement for Bare Nature Surfboards, Tracks, 1971.
[Lennox Head, cropped]
Subsequently, Roy Meisel purchased Bare Nature Surfboards outright, however, "before he closed the doors, someone stole the name and trade marked it.
Roy, very laided back, couldn't be bothered defending my original name which he owned, (and which) I was ready to buy back from him."  Bob Newland then "spent some time working for Warren Cornish Surfboards, before starting Surf Aids in 1973.

- updated thanks to Bob Newland, who, in late 2013 forwarded a large amount of interesting information and images on the surfing industry in Bryon Bay 1965-1980.

Baron Surfboards
150 Taren Point Road, Taren Point NSW .
1968
Frank Latta
Bob Shot

Baron Sufboards were an off-shoot of Peter Clarke Surfboards, manufactured at the same location or another factory in the area.
This may have been for business reasons or adoption of a more contemporary name in line with the industry practice of more colourful and decorative decals in the late 1960's.
The decal script was usually in a type of Old English, as previously used by Shane Surfboards, and the use of a Iron Cross graphic was common on many boards
Frank Latta, possible shaper, and any other Peter Clarke Surfboards' employee of the period.
See entry for Peter Clarke Surfboards
There was also  Baron Kneeboards, which may/may not be connected to the original company, see below.
Noted: Kneeboard by Rob McLaggan.

Leigh noted in January 2003:
At the end of the 60's and probably to '72 there was a Surfboard manufacturer on Taren Point Road, Taren Point NSW 2229 called Baron Surfboards maybe Frank Latta was one of the shapers.

In July 2009, Dean at Erina NSW emailed (adjusted):
Hey  rode some kids old single today at the beach with a Baron decal, same as on your site, on the deck.
Super plain, no stringer or measurements, but was signed Bob Shot.

BJ Surfboards
The majority of the following important details contributed with many thanks, by David Wilson, January 2011.
1969
Pagewood
Barry O'Rourke- started making boards at the rear of his parents home.
Greg Noyes noted, December 2011: "BJ came from Barry John O’Rourke.
He called it BJ because BO stood for body odour."
Colin Eagle, shaping (representing Cronulla).
Wayne Williams, shaping (an apprentice plumber in Bondi).
David Wilson- glasser (also working at G&S Surfboards, Carringbah).
Production averaged "15 boards a week in a small garage".
circa 1972
Little Bay /La Perouse
"Barry bought a house near the cemetery in Little Bay /La Perouse and began making foam moulds and
blowing his own foam."
Shaping-
Brad Mayes  and Richard Futcher (friend of Gordon Merchant)
- replacing Colin Eagle (who did not like travelling).
Wayne Williams (also shaping for G&S Surfboards).
David Wilson- glasser (continued working at G&S).
circa 1974
Cleavdon Street, Botany, NSW.
Shapers- Wayne Williams (later at Wilderness Surfboards), Brad Mayes (see Bondi Underground and Brad Mayes Surfboards, below), Richard Futcher.

Bob Waddell , Bob Hanson, Richard Evans

Kevin McKell and Rob McLaggan

1980
Richard Evans
"Barry went into real estate in 1980 , and gave the factory and business to Richard Evans."

Kris Puckerage

BJ Correspondence (by email, edited):
azza wrote, January 2004:
"... BJ surfboards they actually started in 1974, ... my dad still has his board in our garage that he got made in 1974."

Paul Guy noted, August 2009:
"Bought my first BJ surfboard, shaped by Brad Mayes, in 1974.
I was 17 at the time and it was bought with the pay from 4 weeks of holiday work."

BJ decal, circa 1976, contributed with thanks by Paul, September 2010.

Robert Hook reported in September 2010:
"As I understand it BJ boards was actually started by one Barry O'Rourke out of his parents garage in Pagewood.
I forget the street but am sure I could supply if required.
Richard Evans, thankfully I never could get that guy to make me a board the way I asked him to.
One of the most underrated designer/builders ever born."

David Wilson contributed the above comments in italics, January 2011, and:
"Barry O'Rourke was the owner and a fantastic character ... this guy was unreal, nothing was an obstacle.
Brad, Wayne and myself all agreed, Barry was the best manufacturer we ever worked for.
Barry died of cancer in 2009."

- many thanks to David Wilson, Robert Hook, Paul Guy and azza.

"Tom Blaxel started manufacturing surfboards in the early 1970's in Scarborough Beach Road, Osborne Park.
Prior to 1973 Tom was doing most of the shaping and glassing himself.
He employed Chris Young (Nat's younger brother) in mid 1973 to shape many boards including one for myself for a surfing tour from WA to Qld in January 1974.
I have entered a decal shot including photos of Chris's signature and the board.
Board size was 7'4" x 18" with a single fin , complete with leg rope hole.

In December 2020, Amy kindly updated this entry  (edited):
(My Dad) Warren Partington's business, first as Bobbanarring Surfboards and later as Warren Surfboards.
Both were manufactured at 22 Gweno Avenue, Frankston, Victoria.
There may have been some artwork by Mick Marchants, if his name is on a board.

The Balnarring Historical Society reports that
Bobbanarring is the Aboriginal name for Point Leo on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula.
Point Leo was possibly named after Leo Hemingway, who ran his tobacco van between Hastings and Flinders in the 1930s, or some consider that the headland has the shape of a lion's face.

Mike Brown
(South Australia) added the following (edited) notes to a Burford surfboard he offered on ebay.com.au:

"Don Burford Sufrboards were sold by long time friend, Ron Moir's  Challenger Surfshop in central Adelaide.
When Burford Surfboards were relocated to Currumbin Valley, Queensland, in the early 1970s, the Adelaide Challenger shop continued to retail their boards, including some Michael Peterson designs.
The Hang-gliding decal (above), produced for boards destined for the Challenger shop, was recognition of Ron Moir's role in the introduction of hang-gliding to South Australia.
The decal was later replaced by a simpler, and less obscure, Challenger Surfboards script."
