Australian National Travel Association : Picturesque Australia, c1930.

Photographs from
Australian National Travel Association: Picturesque Australia.
Flinders Street Railway Building, Melbourne, circa 1930.

Introduction.
Published circa 1930  to promote Australia as a destination for tourists and immigrants, this 40 page (unpaginated) booklet is a compilation of black and white photographs with minimal text.
Many of the photographs are off-set or are overlapped with other images.
Dating is an approximation, but the photographs were probably taken about the same time as those in H. Phillips' Surfing Beaches of Sydney (1930).
See image on the home page.

There are two pages devoted to the theme of "Sea and Surf" with several images of beach-goers.
These include one image of a lifesaving team and reel (with the early cork belt), a surfboard rider in action and five riders carrying their solid timber boards.
One background image appears to show two riders in a surf canoe (not reproduced).

On a separate page, an advertisement for the South Australian Government Publicity and Tourist Bureau includes a photograph of prone board riders at Victor Harbor.

A copy of the publication was contributed by Henry Marfleet, June 2009, with many thanks.

Five riders carrying solid timber boards.

Note the variation in design, particularly the shorter model on the far left.

The variation in swimming costumes possibly indicates that the photograph was taken at an inter-club competition.

Surfboard rider in action.

Possibly Manly Beach.
Initially offset.

This image was possibly the template for a noted painting of a boardrider for an Australian beer manufacturer.
See below.
