Surfboard Girl Dodges The Sharks

Pat Trass, first woman to enrol in the Australian Surf Board Association, has been out mingling with sharks, without
knowing it.
Fred Pentecost, one of the best surfboard riders on the coast, said: "I've sighted sharks when I've had Pat out on the
board, but did not tell her.
"I just picked up a wave and went inshore.
"If I had told her she might have panicked."
Seven Others Follow
But Pat, who is only 18, is not the type to panic.
Often she has had to swim from 300 yards out when her board capsized.
Seven other women have since enrolled at North Bondi, where there are more than 60 male members.

Pentecost, who has had many encounters with sharks, said:
"A 14-foot thrasher came at me one day, but
I got my feet out of the water in time.
"He swam past, but came back again before I could catch a wave.
"Another day a 10ft tiger shark had a go.
"It would have been curtains if I had lost my head and capsized."

Help Rescues

Pentecost went out half a mile to rescue an American of Ben Buckler.

An Australian soldier was seen at the same spot soon after wards and Pentecost went out again.
His board capsized in the heavy sea, but he held on to the man until another surfboard came to their aid.
Association secretary (Mr. F. D. Hoinville) said today:
"The surfboard men are doing a good job,, helping to patrol the beaches.
"Surfboards can get out to rescues when beltmen find it difficult."

Life-savers Place Ban On Surfboard Events

An application by the Australian Surf Board Association for affiliation has been refused by the Surf Life-saving Association.
Because of the increasing interest being shown by its members in surf-board racing, a special investigation is being made by the Surf Life-saving
Association into the situation.
The object is to have life-saving clubs cater to a greater degree for their members who require surfboard racing.
A committee will report to next months' meeting of the association.
The secretary of the Life-saving Association, Mr. G. Millar, said last night the application for affiliation had been refused because the S.L.S.A. constitution provided that affiliation could be granted only to surf life-saving clubs.

Surf Board Club Planned For Every Beach

Formation of a surf-board club on every beach in the metropolitan area is planned by the newly formed Surf Board Association.
Plans for a comprehensive programme of surf board races for next season are under consideration, and championship races in the surf and still water are proposed.
Despite the threat of the Surf Life-saving Association to discipline any of its members who compete with the Surf Board Association, membership is still increasing.
The secretary of the Surf Board Association. Mr. F. D Hoinville. said last night there was widespread discontent because of the refusal of the S.L.S.A. to grant, the Board Association the right to hold surf board championships open to all.
"Surf board racing has nothing to do with surf life-saving," said Mr. Hoinville.
"We have 13 members of the S.L.S.A. with us and they intend to retain their membership.
Next season they will be given races of a type over which the S.L.S.A. will have no jurisdiction.
Mr. Hoinville added there was no reason why the S.L.S.A. would not grant the Association the right to hold State and open championships for board riders.
It was the aim of the Association to make surf board racing so popular that interstate and international competitions would be held.

SURFBOARD MOVE

The Surf Life-Saving Association
last night decided to form a surfboard section.
A special committee suggested that the section appoint its own officials and stipulated that members must be holders of the bronze medallion.
It also recommended that surf-board carnivals be permited next season.
Commenting on the decision the secretarv of the Australian Surf-board Association Mr D. Hoinville said he approved of the scheme which showed that the Surf Life-Saving Association now recognised that such an organisation is needed.

BRIGHTER SURF CARNIVALS

Tedious rescue and resuscitation competitions at surf carnivals may become fewer as a result of decisions by the council of the Surf Life Saving Association.
They probably will be replaced next season at some carnivals by more exciting water events.
The decisions were made during a discussion on a recommendation by a sub-committee that a surf-board section be formed.

of Australia has a surfboard and surf ski committee, which has given full approval to the use of surfboards and skis as part of official rescue gear for next season.
A new "drill"' is to be devised and will be learned by ,surfboard riders who go to the rescue of surfers in distress.
It is proposed to have all surf boards used for rescue work painted with club colour's and numbered so complaints may be made if the boards are being used dangerously.
A strong committee has been elected to look after this side of surf work.
It is' headed by Mr. David

Surfboard Captain

FRANK ALDER, Maroubra Surf Club member, has received a pleasant recognition.
He is Australia's
first surfboard club captain.
That is an honour due to the first man to introduce hollow surf boards to Australia.
He passed on his secret to others interested in the art of surfboard riding and in using boards to help save lives.
Alder was.elected surfboard captain at Maroubra a fortnight ago.
The
club has a strong surfboard section which has devised a drill for the use of boards in rescues.
The drill will probably be adopted by all clubs.
Maroubra will have-surfboard patrols eight hours a day at week-ends.
Surf
board riders, who have learned a system of signals, will hhsted to the assistance of a surfer in difficulties and support him until a line is
brought from the shore.
Much time can be saved.in n akinn rescues.
Boards should reduce the risk of drownings
No venture in the surf movement for some year has been so worthwhile.

SURF BOARD PAGEANT
Maroubra Surf Life-Saving Club has decided to conduct a "surf-board pageant" to introduce the new style of beach entertainment agreed to by the Surf Life-Saving Association.
It will be the first event of its kind in Australia, and follows the style of American beach entertainment.
The club's publicity officer, Mr. Roy Arkins, said last night that the "pageant" would he held on a Sunday afternoon, probably early in December.
Main idea of the function is to introduce surf-board racing to Australians.

Misbehaviour At Surf Carnivals

A warning was issued yesterday by the Surf Life Saving Association that misbehaviour by members travelling to and from carnivals will bring expulsion from the association and penalisation of clubs.
Threat of drastic action was contained in a circular issued to all clubs.
It stated that complaints had been received by the association concerning the throwing of mirries of various kinds from lorries transporting surfmen to the carnivals.
The association states that a senior officer of a club must travel in any lorry carrying club members.
Beach Breathes.
Regarding conduct at carnivals, the circular said: "It is regretted that following the first carnival of the season the referee has had to report
adversely on the conduct of some of the competitors, specially in regard to encroachment on the competition area."
The warning related to surfboard and surf ski riders, and emphasised the need for fairness in the novice surf races.
"This warning against bad behaviour at carnivals had to be given on more than one occasion last season and the association is determined to stop it," the circular added.
